- Profitable lanes
Some dispatchers specialize in certain freight types such as reefer or flatbed freight.
Rate Negotiation
Once a load is identified, the dispatcher negotiates with the broker to improve the rate and terms.
Negotiations may include:
- Higher linehaul pay
- Detention pay
- Layover pay
- TONU (truck ordered not used)
- Fuel surcharge adjustments
A skilled dispatcher can sometimes secure better rates than an owner-operator working alone because they negotiate daily and know current market conditions.
Load Booking and Confirmation
After the driver approves the load:
- The dispatcher books it with the broker
- Confirms pickup and delivery details
- Sends the rate confirmation to the driver
- Provides directions, appointment times, and special instructions
The dispatcher may also complete broker setup packets and compliance paperwork.
